What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?

TMS is a procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of major depression.

What happens during a TMS Appointment?

TMS appointments last about 20 minutes. When you arrive at the clinic, you will be checked in and taken to the TMS room. The technician will give you earplugs, place the cap on your head, and then place the helmet according to the protocol established during the mapping appointment. You will then be able to relax for the duration of the appointment. The TMS machine is loud, so you may want to watch TV or sit quietly for the appointment. Once the machine completes the treatment, the tech will remove the helmet and cap, and your appointment will be complete.

How can I prepare for my initial appointment?

Once we have your records and we call to schedule you we will send our New Patient packet to the email address you provide. We will need this information PRIOR to your appointment with our Provider. Please download the forms, use a free PDF Editor to complete them, save them and then return them to us through our secure email. Please remember to bring your insurance, prescription and ID cards to your first appointment.

How do I know if TMS is right for me?

Call our office at +1 (240) 566-3130 ext: 7701 One of our staff will do a quick screening with you.
If you meet the criteria during screening, we will create a patient profile. BEFORE being seen for an evaluation, you MUST supply us with your psychiatric medication records, specifically medication doses and dates, and complete all paperwork. Paperwork will be sent to an email you provide. Upon receiving your records, our provider will review them, and if it is appropriate, our office will contact you to set up an appointment for an evaluation with our psychiatrist. Our psychiatrist will determine if TMS is the right treatment for you.

What is Spravato?

Spravato is an esketamine nasal spray that is prescribed for Major Depressive Disorder.

What is nasal esketamine?

Nasal esketamine – Spravato® – is the only FDA-approved ketamine-based psychedelic treatment for depression and is covered by many major insurance companies.

How do I qualify for Spravato

In order to be considered for Spravato, you need to be taking an oral antidepressant currently. You also need to have tried and failed at least two oral antidepressants from two different classes at the maximally tolerated dose for at least eight weeks in order for most insurance to cover the treatment. There are also some health conditions that may preclude you from Spravato. It’s always best to check with your insurance company for what the coverage and requirements are.

What happens during a Spravato appointment?

Spravato appointments last two hours. You will need to have a ride to and from your appointment as you will not be able to drive after treatment. During your appointment, you will self-administer the medication with the provider’s guidance. You may feel sleepy and mildly nauseous, you may experience disassociation, and your blood pressure may go up. During your appointment, you will have your blood pressure monitored. Your appointment will end when your blood pressure has lowered to an acceptable range and 120 minutes have passed.

Do you offer virtual appointments?

After your initial evaluation which is always in person we do offer 30 minute follow up appointments.

Do you take insurance?

We take most insurances, including Medicare and Medicaid.
